DESCRIPTION:“Sun\, Sailing and Science”- Casimir Spring School in Arnemuiden\nDear Casimir PhD-students and Postdocs\, you are all invited for the 5th Casimir Spring School\, 6-8 May in Arnemuiden\, in the province of Zeeland\, the Netherlands! The Spring School is only intended for PhD-students and postdocs from the Kavli Institute in Delft and the LION in Leiden. This means that there will be no staff present in Arnemuiden: apart from the keynote lectures and workshops\, all talks will be given by Casimir PhD-students and postdocs only. The broad spectrum of research themes within the Casimir Research School will be covered by three thematic plenary sessions\, each with one external keynote speaker. During each session\, six students will be given the opportunity to give a short talk (20 minutes) and discuss their own work with the group.\nThis year the sessions will be ‘Biophysics / soft condensed matter’\, ‘Solid State Physics’ and ‘Quantum Optics’. The keynote speakers for these sessions are: dr. Harald Janovjak (Biophysics / soft condensed matter\, IST Austria)\, prof. Amir Yacoby (Solid State Physics\, Harvard University\, USA)\, and -still to be confirmed- dr. Vadim Makarov (University of Waterloo\, Canada). We have invited the external speakers to join us during the full three days.\nA poster session is planned on Tuesday afternoon – all Casimir students have the possibility to present their work then. The first night\, there will be two parallel workshop sessions\, one on the career step from postdoc to young faculty\, the other on the future of published articles. And on the second day\, in the afternoon\, we will go sailing on the Veerse meer. In short\, the Casimir Spring School in Arnemuiden is a great way of getting to know your fellow Casimir students!\nFrom today on\, you can register by filling in the form in the below. You can also indicate there if you would like to present your work in a short plenary talk (20 minutes) during one of the sessions\, or if you would like to present a poster on your current research. Furthermore\, since the summer school is not solely about science but also about sailing\, we need to know if your sailing skills are good enough to be a skipper on a small boat. Please also let us know if you would like to go to Arnemuiden with the Casimir bus (from Leiden and Delft).\nMake sure to take part in the Casimir Spring School and register in time! The registration deadline is 31 March 2014. The costs for the summer school\, including all meals and drinks\, are covered by the Casimir Research School. DESCRIPTION:Helmut Schiessel \nUniversiteit Leiden (LION/Theoretical Physics) \n“Breaking the second genetic code ” \nWhen we have a phone conversation we typically share the wire or optical fiber with other people that have phone conversations as well. Multiplexing of information is common in today’s technology and does not surprise us anymore. Remarkably also nature uses multiplexing to write down two layers of information along the DNA molecules. Besides the classical genetic code that encodes the building plans for proteins\, there is a second genetic code which guides the packing of that very DNA molecule. In this talk I shall study the statistical physics underlying the second genetic code by introducing the mutation Monte Carlo scheme. I will then share preliminary results that prove for the first time that multiplexing of the two codes can be achieved to a surprising degree of perfection. And finally I plan to discuss my future plans in this exciting direction of research.

DESCRIPTION:Vincent Mourik  (TUDelft)\n“Majorana fermions in hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowire devices”\nIn condensed matter physics\, Majorana fermions are theoretically proposed fermionic quasiparticles that are equal to their own antiparticle. Theoretically these quasiparticles have been investigated intensively for almost two decades which resulted in many exciting predictions\, some of which are direct results from work done at Leiden University. The most important expectation is that Majorana fermions obey so called ‘non-abelian’ exchange statistics. This property could become very usefull in designing a robust quantum computer.  \nContrary to the rather mature status of the theoretical developments\, experimentally the field is only in its initial stage: experiments are currently focusing on assembling devices based on the right materials and establish the presence of Majorana fermions in such structures. My own research carried out at TU Delft focusses on one particular system that could potentially host Majorana fermions: a device based on InSb semiconducting nanowires combined with a s-wave superconductor\, NbTiN. We have observed a promising feature in tunnel spectroscopy measurements that gives evidence for the presence of a Majorana fermion in our structure [1]. \nIn my talk I will try to give an introduction and overview of the topic from an experimental perspective. Emphasis will be put on what are experimentally necessary conditions to observe the non-abelian exchange statistics of Majorana fermions and how our current experiments in Delft fit in this development towards giving proof of the ‘non-abelianess’ of Majorana fermions by performing braiding operations. \n[1] V.
