DESCRIPTION:Michel Orrit will present several optical methods giving access to signals from single molecules and single gold nanoparticles. Single gold nanoparticles are interesting because of their strong interaction with light mediated by their plasmon resonance\, and because they are chemically and photochemically very stable. The experiments are based on fluorescence or photoluminescence\, scattering\, absorption detected by photothermal contrast\, purely refractive effects leading to shifts of the plasmon resonance\, or plasmon-enhanced fluorescence of weak emitters. DESCRIPTION:On Monday 9th May Julian Gargiulo\, from the University of Buenos Aires and CIBION institute will visit our group. \nPlease find bellow the information for the seminar he will be giving. \n \nPrinting and connecting colloidal nanoparticles with optical forces\nJulian Gargiulo \nOptical printing is a simple and flexible method to bring colloidal nanoparticles from suspension to specific locations of a substrate. However\, its application has been limited to the fabrication of arrays of isolated nanoparticles because\, until now\, it was never possible to bring nanoparticles closer together than approximately 300 nm. Here\, we propose this limitation is due to thermophoretic repulsive forces generated by plasmonic heating of the NPs. We show how to overcome this obstacle and demonstrate the optical printing of connected nanoparticles with well-defined orientation. These experiments constitute a key step toward the fabrication by optical printing of functional nanostructures and microcircuits based on colloidal nanoparticle.\n \nThe seminar will take place at HL207\, starting at 9am.

DESCRIPTION:Optical Investigation of Single Perylene Diimides and their Application as Sensitive Probes in Soft Matter Science\nStefan Krause \nOne of the most suited probe molecule for soft matter investigations on a single molecule level is the perylene diimide-type system (PDI). This class of fluorophores features high quantum efficiency and photo stability. The emission properties of these dyes strongly depend on their backbone conformation which can be influenced by various functional groups. By choosing two types of environment – a clear SiO2 surface and a more rigid polymer matrix – the impact of spatial fluctuations of these functional groups could be investigated. In addition\, the time-dependent reorientation dynamics of perylene diimide molecules at solid interfaces are discussed with respect to the number of pyrdiyl groups which allow for an attachment to surface silanols. \nFinally\, the photo physically investigated perylene diimides are utilized as sensitive probes in actively deformed poly(methylacrylate) and thin films of poly(styrene). In both cases the reorientation dynamics are investigated by means of polarization dependent fluorescence microscopy and give insight into the deformation behavior and micro viscosity of polymers on a single molecule level.
